Foraging Cattail Pollen
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Cattails are one of the extremely valuable survival foods: providing food and useful materials during all four seasons and in most environments.

We will start early, 8:30 a.m., at the Fellowship with a fresh, hot-from-the-oven apple-oatmeal-cattail muffin (lo-gluten). I'll show you cattails in several stages of growth. Then, we'll carpool to a cattail stand (location to be determined). Spend about an hour foraging for the cattail pollen, then head back to the Fellowship, where we'll seive the pollen into a flour state.

You can cut the flour in half in any recipe and substitute the cattail pollen, boosting the nutrition and protein, and giving the final baked good a gorgeous yellow-green color.

Bring good, hardy scissors or knife, a bag to put the tails in (I usually use a sturdy shopping bag), and a sieve/colander. Best footwear is a pair of water sandals, tevos, etc.

Hike Marshall Mesa, home to 51 coal mines from 1859 to 1946. View landmarks and learn the geology and history of this beautiful natural grassland that was once a thriving city with two important railroads crossing it. Marshall was home to saloons, bar brawls, machine guns, labor strikes, fires, child labor, primitive housing, a school, cave homes, cruel coal companies, and settlements of European immigrants. Some say that the coal seams are still smoldering. A guided 3 miles round trip hike with some mild elevation and beautiful views. 8 0 000015.0 15 .00012E7 12 5/19/18 9:11 AM

Eagle Rock School Presentations of Learning (POLS)
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
At the end of each Eagle Rock School trimester in Estes Park, each student is required to give a 20 minute presentation on some learning or growth they experienced during the trimester. These presentations are given to panels comprised of staff and outside visitors. This is your chance to serve on a panel and give meaningful feedback to several of the Eagle Rock students.

As one of this auction item’s winners, you should plan on leaving for Estes Park on Sunday April 8th in the afternoon. We'll carpool if that works for people. I’ll pick up the bill for dinner (alcoholic beverages not included) in Estes and lodging at Eagle Rock (bunk house accommodations). There will be two sessions of presentations on Monday April 9th, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided in the Eagle Rock dinning hall. We’ll head home late afternoon. If you don’t want to go up on Sunday, you are welcome to meet us Monday morning around 8:00 AM for the panelist orientation.

A couple of weeks prior to the presentations, panelists will be asked to download and read the packets of materials that your assigned students have prepared in advance of their presentations.

A Day on the River (Tenkara Style)
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Come join Judy & Mark Cole and a guest of your choosing on a beautiful spring day as they take you to a river near-or-around Boulder County and teach you the art of Tenkara fly fishing. They will provide you with a lunch and a day of being outside, as well as the rod, line and flies. (You will need to provide waders and boots.)

Tenkara fly fishing is a 200-year-old type of fishing practiced in Japan. Primarily used for mountain stream trout fishing, tenkara is one of the most popular methods of angling among fresh-water mountain anglers in Japan. In tenkara one just uses a rod, line and fly. A fixed length of line connects to the tip of the telescopic rod. Casting the fly to where you think the fish are is very quick to learn and intuitive. Landing the fish even more so.

Iichiko Kurobin Shochu
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Shochu is the national spirit of Japan, and while most Americans’ first association of alcohol and Japan will be sake, shochu is more popular and has outsold sake in Japan for the past decade.

Iichiko Kurobin (50 proof)
Visual: Clear.
Taste: Immensely smooth and well distilled. Like a watered down vodka, but with more of a slight sour tang instead of minerality.
Finish: Clean, short and dry. Only a hint of spice and bitterness linger briefly.
Overall:A very well done shochu. I would recommend this to anyone who is curious about this spirit. Try it chilled and at room temperature and see how the character changes.

Starting at NCAR, Wayne Itano will lead a hike to visit various places of geologic interest around Boulder. Further discussion and examining Colorado Front Range fossils at the house. We meet at 8AM and should finish by 1PM, including brunch. The most strenuous part is the walk from NCAR up and down the hills to the Mesa Trail, and maybe partway up the Mesa Trail, then back. I would call this "Boulder moderate." It is steep in places. Consequently the more condiments you offered, the more boys you could afford and the higher your status. We will offer chicken and vegetarian curries with AT LEAST nine condiments. Hot Rize; When I'm Free (Pete Wernick!)
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
From an Amazon reviewer: "....I attended a party in my old hometown of Utica, NY. My friend introduced me to someone as his friend from Colorado. She said , "oh, you're so lucky." I was used to hearing that from people back east who longingly wished to live here, in either their imaginary idea of Colorado or the real one. I asked why , as I prepared my mental notes for my rote answer, and she said "because you get to see Hot Rize anytime you want". Pete Wernick will happily autograph your CD. 3 1 000015.0 15 .0001E7 10

Singing in Tune: Learning How to Carry Pitch
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
When the congregation is asked to sing are you shy about trying, perhaps not sure if you can sing acceptably...? No matter how "bad" a singer you think you are, acclaimed professional musician Pete Wernick will have you singing in tune almost immediately, and give the how-tos about cultivating your ability to do that consistently. This is not a typical "how to sing" class, it's specifically about learning to carry a melody with your voice.

The class will go 90 minutes on an evening at the convenience of the participants.
