'Distance Walk' House Concert
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Enjoy an evening of great food and great music at the home of Mary Sullivan! A scrumptious summer feast will be provided by chefs Patrick Caldwell and Joyce Bennett.
DISTANCE WALK is a Denver-based indie folk quartet that features FUSD's Barry Osborne on banjo and vocals, and Seth Fine on guitar and vocals. The band also features Olivia Shaw on fiddle, Niki Tredinnick (The Dollhouse Thieves) on vocals, clarinets, and percussion. Their mix of old-time folk, post-punk, Celtic and baroque music creates a melodic sound that is at turns ethereal and down to earth. While they focus on original songs, their set also includes a mix of covers reimagined in their distinct sound.
Learn more about them, including links to music at distancewalk.com.

Enjoy a lovely dinner on Lila Laux's patio prepared by our own Sally Isaacson. Then sit and enjoy a jazz concert that features a jazz vocal and guitar duo, Carly Johnson and Craig Wagner. Playing vintage jazz standards from the 20s-60s,think Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughn from Swing to Bossa nova. Auction Dinner at the Imperial Chinese Restaurant
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
It's been (what?--four years?)since the church auction last offered participants the chance to dine at the Imperial Chinese restaurant with a handful of like-minded folks. Well, the wait is over! The usual sponsors are excitedly planning this event for later this year.
We scoped out the Imperial Chinese recently and the place is looking more attractive than ever. The young staff are gracious and eager. The neighborhood on 431 South Broadway is teeming with activity.
The menu on the large lazy Susan is fixed this year instead of individual orders off a menu and sharing.

Beginning Dance Class for Children
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Sign your children up for a fun and energetic dance class, taught by Diane Page and held in the chapel, with music by Aretha Franklin as well as Tchaikovsky. Diane is from the Colorado Ballet Academy, and teaches presently at the Colorado New Style Salsa/Bachata Dance studio. Students will learn the basics of dance technique and will have fun doing so! They will learn why football players study ballet to improve athletic performance and avoid injury. The class will be geared toward boys as well as girls. (Unfortunately, in the United States, boys are discouraged from dancing. First Unitarian can do better.) Parents are encouraged to observe. This is a group class, and 20 people can sign up. Letterboxing Adventure in Fairmount Cemetery Come experience the world-wide scavenger hunt known as letterboxing! You will follow clues and find hidden letterboxes in Fairmount Cemetery -- which is a great nature-in-the-city destination! (Bring your binoculars if you want to stick around to do some birding afterwards.)

Once you learn this fun activity, you can search for letterboxes wherever you go -- they are literally hidden all over the world!

All supplies will be provided, but you may want to bring some gardening gloves to protect your hands from scratchy bush branches.

After finding the letterboxes, we will picnic and enjoy some light snacks.

(Children participate for free.)

Movie Series: The Hero's Journey Join other movie-lovers to view and discuss a series of movies that share the features of The Hero’s Journey, as described by Joseph Campbell in his book, “The Hero With a Thousand Faces.” Campbell studied the religions of the world, and came up with the “hero’s journey” as the metaphor connecting all the stories and histories shared in these spiritual traditions. We’ll meet together in at the home of Jane Ashley to view the films, and then discuss them. Some of the movies: Being There, Tender Mercies, Harriett. We’ll choose others as a group. Suggested donation: $60 for the series of six sessions. Popcorn and soft drinks provided. There’s room for 10 guests in my TV room.
Dates: Wednesday evenings 6:30-9:30 pm
First session: Wednesday, June 7.
Other five dates will be set later. In 2023 — August, October, December; in 2024 — February and April.

Day of the Dead Celebration
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Join us for this participatory and family-friendly (kid price $5 each) afternoon of remembrance, celebration, laughter and story!

We take inspiration from the Mexican Día de los Muertos (when people gather to remember and share stories – often funny anecdotes – of departed loved ones) and the Celtic festival of Samhain (when the boundary between this world and the spirit world was believed to be thin. It was thought the souls of the dead revisited their homes seeking hospitality - so a candle was placed in the window to light their way, and a place for them set at the table.)

We’ll have an altar – please bring photos and/or mementos. Perhaps a favorite piece of music. Or bring your loved one’s favorite food to share. Ingrid will be making Eric’s “Heavy-Metal S’mores”, and he would insist on having AC/DC's "Back in Black" played!

There will be time to tell stories and to give thanks for the joy they brought to our lives. Hearty snacks and drinks provided – and we’ll “raise a glass” in a toast to our beloved dead.

"Cottage in the Woods" at Rye Mountain Park (30 minutes SW of Pueblo, CO)
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Spend a fun weekend (2 to 3 nights) with friends and/or family at the base of Greenhorn Mountain. The Jones family is excited to share our 700 sf "cottage in the woods" in 2023 between June 1 and September 29 on dates mutually agreed to. You are surrounded by lovely forest and directly across the street from Rye Mountain Park with hiking trails, biking trails, a disk golf course through the trees, a small river, and even a playground. 15 miles away is Lake Isabel where you can fish, kayak, and paddleboard, and a little further up the street is Bishop's Castle. Our cottage is our personal retreat and not set up as an Airbnb. We would ask guests clean up after themselves and take any garbage and recycling into town for disposal (there is no garbage service). The property uses a 250 gallon cistern for water...which means that there is running cold water, but it is limited so thoughtful conservation is needed (i.e. flush toilets only when necessary). Hot water may not be available. There is a bathtub but not a shower. The kitchen cabinets and counters are very outdated. There is a stovetop, small BBQ, new refrigerator, stocked kitchen, all new furniture, new high quality mattresses, a large TV to watch DVDs (no cable or internet service), and a hammock. Deer are frequent visitors. One bedroom has a bunk bed system w/ trundle that sleeps 4 (1 twin bed plus 2 singles). The living room has a separate sleeping nook for 2 (twin) and a new, comfortable queen sleeper sofa with foam mattress. Our family regularly stays with a total of 8 guests if you don't mind being close. It is very comfortable to sleep 4. Rye, Colorado is 30 minutes southwest from Pueblo, CO (2 1/2 hours from Denver)--this means all the joy of the mountains without the traffic from I-70. 1 0 000400.0 400 .00125E7 125
