Friday, May 22, 2020 marks the 83rd anniversary of the Little Steel strike. Discover the fascinating social history of big steel in the Mahoning Valley. We start with a guided tour of the Historical Center of Industry and Labor to get a sense of life and class struggle during the steel years. We then travel to see the different levels of housing built for steelworkers, and drive through upper class neighborhoods of steel managers. We will then learn how Youngstown is adapting post-steel with a walk through an area of new incubator-led development and enjoy lunch at Cultivate, a co-op restaurant there. We will visit the amazing county courthouse and see how a nationwide business repurposes old beautiful buildings. What did Butler do before his museum? Why is a reservoir named after Michael Kirwan? How did the Irish get the better steel jobs? Learn all this and more! This will be a one day trip from 9 am to 5 pm. Limited to 12 people in one van. Fair amount of walking and stairs. Ride along with me to visit all of the participating breweries listed on the 2020 Summit Brewery Passport. While the full details for the 2020 season have not been announced, 2019 participants were challenged to visit 22 breweries across Summit, Stark, Medina and Portage counties between March and December 2019. Those who filled their passports were invited to an exclusive Summit Brew Path Bash and entered into a drawing for $2,000. Our many trips will take place on Sunday afternoons, during which we will visit 3 or 4 brew pubs each. Breweries which do not have Sunday hours will be visited on Saturday.
