Fabric panels loomed in Nigeria Hand-loomed fabric from Katsina, Nigeria. Can be used as table-runners or wall hangings. In Katsina, people would use them as shawls. Some would sew two panels together but only halfway and use them as an outer garment. It gets very cold in Northern Nigeria in the winter months. Looming is considered a man's job. Women never do it. Color-blocked red, black, blue is 18"x 60" with fringe. Black background with geometric designs in red, blue, orange and yellow is 20"x 62" with fringe. There are 2 panels of each of these colors, sold as a single item. 1 0 000030.0 30 .00015E7 15

An Introduction to Electronics

Starting with the relationship between current, voltage, and resistance, we'll explore the fundamentals of low voltage electrical circuits. After fiddling with basic "passive" components, we'll use the venerable "555" timer chip to blink some LED lights. At the end of the workshop, we'll fire up the soldering irons and move our circuits to a more permanent home on a prototyping board. Tools and components will be provided by me; there is no additional "materials" cost. The duration of the workshop will be 3 to 4 hours. Kids are welcome, but please consider the duration and that we will work, briefly, with very hot soldering irons.

The workshop will be held in June 2014 at a date and place to be arranged.

Thanks to Tim Klein.

This stained glass piece was inspired by the rainbow version of TVUUC's chalice that was posted on our Facebook page. It was made with a reclaimed picture frame, a glass on glass mosaic that is glued and grouted (a more eco friendly version of the stained glass look). With this technique you merge the cut glass look of traditional stained glass with the pieced glass look of mosaics.

Brass Bracelet and Earrings One of the joys of doing craft shows is trading with other artists. I gave one of my Solid Cats for this lovely jewelry: it is a flat solid brass bracelet and a pair of matching dangle earrings. The brass was hand-worked by the artist, then treated to form a multi-colored patina. Though the earrings are dangle, they are quite light, the bracelet is a bit more solid. This is a handblown glass paperweight, clear with swirls of green inside. The surface is frosted and on the top is a shiny figure of a chalice with a flame above. Desk Set - Movie & Dessert
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
In 1957, the cool corporate types from "Mad Men" were still pimply-faced teenagers--true corporate cool was embodied by Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in "Desk Set." Many people consider this the very best of the Tracy/Hepburn movies (and we think they're right!). She is the head of a corporate research department and he is the computer consultant that has been hired to install the upgrade. Office gossip and office politics abound. Needless to say, Tracy and Hepburn fall in love and everything works out in the end. (We're not giving away any spoilers to tell you that).

"Desk Set" came out in 1957 and is full of 50's corporate culture, so we are going to be serving desserts from the 50's: think molded jello whip and pineapple upside-down cake. Ambrosia. Lemon-merangue pie. I admit, when we first thought of this, the 50's didn't seem rife with yummy desserts, but as we've cogitated, some tasty ideas have come up--chocolate pudding with chocolate cookies around it. Macaroons. Banana cream pie. Coconut cream pie. CHOCOLATE cream pie....

Please join us at Jamie Adcock's gorgeous digs for appetizers (Jamie may even come up with some Cheeze Whiz!)and a look at her garden before the movie and LOTS of desserts afterwards.

Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 6 pm. Thanks to Laura Broderick, Janette Kennedy, and Jamie Adcock.

Vitruvian Robot Pendant

Da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man" was to be a part of a collection of illustrations which he called "Cosmografia del Micro Mundo" or "cosmography of the micro world" .

Da Vinci may not have intended to include robots in his collection so we felt we should.

The "Vitruvian Bot" Pendant is a small robot made of vintage watch parts and metals. The body head and legs are antique watch spindles, the eyes are vintage watch jewels, and the front has vintage gears.

The bot is set into a brass bezel, wire wrapped with 22 gauge half hard, half round, and the pendant is strung on a 22" antique brass chain with clasp.

Diameter is 1 3/8 inches or 3.5 mm.

Single loomed panel from Katsina, Nigeria This is a single panel in brown and gold synthetic threads. We bought it in Katsina, Nigeria in 1968. It is purely decorative, as a hanging, a table runner or possibly as a throw. Using a loom is considered a man's job in Nigeria. Women never do it. This panel measures 72"x20" and has a sheen because of the thread used. 1 0 000030.0 30 .00015E7 15

Three bottles of award-winning California organic olive oil Here’s a chance to experience Apollo olive oil, an exceptional organic extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil from the foothills of California’s Sierra Nevada. Over the years Apollo Olive Oil has won 25 gold medals, 12 silver medals, 6 best in class, and 4 best in show. They have been chosen one of the top 10 olive oil producers in the world and the best organic olive oil in the US.

Apollo’s olives are grown and milled to produce oils as high in polyphenols and alpha-tocopherols as possible (the essential part of a Mediterranean diet) and they have a flavor unlike any olive oil I’ve ever tasted. They range in intensity from mild to strong.

Explore their site and learn about Apollo, then select the 3 12oz. bottles you’d like to try in any combination. I’ll order them and have them sent directly to you. I’ll pay the shipping, of course. Visit Apollo's Gourmet Products page to find descriptions of Apollo's oils.

At the top of Apollo’s website is the quotation, "Wisdom demands a new orientation of science and technology towards the organic, the gentle, the non-violent, the elegant and beautiful." Sounds so very UU.

Thanks to Ellie Moses.

Progressive Provender around Parkridge Discover the charms of Parkridge, an active, diverse “arts and gardens” community where several TVUUC members and staff have chosen to live. This progressive dinner in three of our homes will feature local foods and great conversation.
Appetizers and drinks will be served in Kim Mason's 1920 bungalow. Walk around the corner and a couple of blocks to the two-story house built in the late 1800's where Heather Finney and Carrie Balent will welcome you to share the main course. Then drive to Park Place (formerly (Park Junior High School) to enjoy a selection of desserts and Leslie Gengozian's fiddle music in Gordon and Judy's spacious condo. Note that all participants must be comfortable with some walking and managing stairs to attend this dinner.
You will catch a glimpse of classic George Barber-designed Victorian homes next to small Depression-era rentals as you travel between courses. We are proud that this revitalizing community just north and east of downtown has always been home to a diverse group of people. Thanks to Heather Finney and Carrie Balent, Leslie Gengozian, Gordon and Judy Gibson, and Kim Mason.

I may be a Great Artist but even I occasionally make mistakes; if you bid on this you'll get a whole box of 'em. This auction item is a box of genuine, hand blown glass blunders. Some of these are perfectly good except one eye got misshapen, some of them get dropped and slightly chipped, and some of them are just complete crash-and-burns. However, none of it is sharp or dangerous and and every piece in the box is...interesting. This year there are a lot of clear prototypes, so you can own the very first attempt at some of my pieces (and see why they were later reworked!).

All Your Eggs In One Basket Fresh eggs from our hens, Agnes, Annabelle, Dorcas, Stella, Hester, Adeline, Ophelia ,Violet, Victoria, Ester, Shaddie, Matilda, Phoebe, Eliza, Celia, Geneve and Carl (long story) with moral support from roosters Elisha, Jacob and Easu. Colors will vary depending on who laid them. Recently they've formed a worker run and worker governed egg production cooperative. This means that exactly when the eggs are available will depend on when the hens vote to return to work after a seasonal hiatus. It may be that on auction night you'll receive a basket with a dozen actual eggs and two coupons for a dozen more each. Or, if they are too busy with Yule preparations to lay eggs at the moment, your basket may contain three coupons. In any case you’ll get a total of three dozen eggs from hens with names who have never heard of factory farms and, except for the occasional pecking order issue, live quiet, pastoral lives pretty much in line with UU principles. 3 0 000010.0 10 .00005E7 5

Brewer Tour – Asheville Craft Brews May 30-June 1, 2014 Asheville NC is a paradise for beer research. More than a dozen breweries make craft beers (microbrews) there, some of which are not even bottled (visitors drink the available supply!). John Bohstedt will lead a field trip on this weekend. At Friday happy hour, we'll meet at a delightful pub in the River Arts district, and probably move on to one or two more, depending on mood and mobility. Saturday midday we will try to tour a brewery or two, and then pub-crawl some more that evening. Sidetrips to the special Grove Park Inn definitely possible. Ingles groceries has beers you can’t get in K-town. Sunday we will be escorted home by a pack of trained guide dogs -- or not!
Participants will arrange their own transport (carpooling if possible) & lodging. (We know the perfect place.) We have room for sixteen serious researchers. For those research internships, bidding starts at $30. We’ll also welcome several designated drivers, for free. Thanks to Kathy & John Bohstedt.

Original Portrait Painting/Acrylic on canvas
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Have someone you'd like immortalized through time?...yourself perhaps? I'm offering here to paint an original, acrylic on canvas, up to 21” x 24” portrait. Will do from any suitable photograph of your choice; head and shoulders-ish; background color pulled from the picture, or color of your choice if it works. For me, likeness is everything in (the type of) portrait I'm proposing here, and centimeters of difference in placement of features can completely change a face. For this reason and for expediency, I will use a grid-transfer system from photo to canvas. I will do as quickly as possible, but time frame for completion must be able to be open-ended. I have (2) portrait paintings I'll be happy to provide photos of as examples of my work. One titled "Selfie" of Selina Gaia was recently on display as part of the Members & Friends exhibit in our gallery. (pictured here) 1 1 000250.0 250 .00075E7 75

1 Hour CranioSacral Therapy Session
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch healing approach that can create dramatic improvements in your life!

CST releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. Your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord, otherwise known as your Central Nervous System. CST releases tension to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct. By freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best, CST naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your health and well-being. The client is able to relax (fully clothed and under a blanket) for the entire session. CST can be used for relaxation or to help with specific issues such as chronic pain, headaches, insomnia, or any stress-related issue, including post-traumatic stress.
