The dictum for environmentalists is reduce (what you consume), reuse (rather than buying new) and recycle (what you can't reuse). Most of what we buy today is planned for obsolescence, not repair. Nevertheless, much can be repaired to serve you happily for many years. I have fixed quite a few small appliances that would have otherwise gone to the landfill--coffeemakers, waffle irons, vacuum cleaners, etc. But, I am not always successful. For a single donation, I will attempt to repair up to three (3) small appliances within the coming year. If I can't repair it, I'll return or recycle it. If parts must be purchased, you will pay for the parts. My track record on electronic devices, TV, radios, computers and so on is not so good. This year our hens Phoebe, Eliza, Celia, Dorcas, Hester, Adeline, Ophelia, Violet, Victoria, Ester, Annabelle, Carl (long story), Sophie, Daphne, Rachel, Muriel, Myrtle, Roxanne, Betsy, Della, Hazel, Blanche, Rosalie, Wilma , Cecile, Marie and Emilie have, after much discussion, again voted to support the TVUUC auction with a donation of their eggs. Elisha, the senior rooster, who has a non-voting advisory role also agreed. Chuck and Rex, the young roosters from this spring's hatching have no vote and no role as they have been banished from the family compound and family business for behavior issues. However being as this is a worker run, family egg production collective and the short days of winter being the traditional time that hens vacation from egg laying, exactly how many eggs are available on auction night will depend on how many hens feel so moved as to leave vacation and lay. On auction night you'll receive a basket with either a dozen actual eggs and two coupons for a dozen more each or a basket with less than a dozen and three coupons. In 1937, Miklos Laszlo premiered his play "Illatszertár" at the Pest Theater in Budapest, Hungary. It was such a smash hit (despite the fact that you've never heard of it) that it was translated into English and opened in New York as "Parfumerie." Three years later, it was made into a film directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, called (drum roll, please) "The Shop Around the Corner." In 1949, it was made into a musical with Judy Garland and Van Johnson (and Buster Keaton!..but more about him next year...) called "In the Good Old Summertime." in 1963, it was made into a completely different musical called "She Loves Me", which ran on Broadway for more than a year. In 1998, it was updated to be digital and technical, and released as "You've Got Mail," starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. And finally (so far, at least), the story was translated into French, called "La Boutique au Coin de la Rue" (literally "The Shop at the Corner of the Street") and produced in Paris, where it won 5 Moliere Awards. There is no one alive who has seen all of the productions, but there are several people who have seen several of them, and the general opinion is that the best of all of them is "The Shop Around the Corner." So, because only the best is good enough for our auction bidders, we shall be showing "The Shop Around the Corner" to the lucky winners of this event. BUT, the musical "She Loves Me" is famous for it's song "Vanilla Ice Cream." It's a pretty good song, though the rest of the show isn't nearly as good as the Lubitsch movie. However, we could not resist using it as a hook to serve you all sorts of wonderful desserts that have vanilla ice cream on top of them, in them, or under them. (We admit, it's kind of a cheat, but the only Hungarian dessert we know how to make is rugelach, and we don't like rugelach.)
