  • Julie Milner and Kamran Jahanshahi
Persian Dinner Iran is such a hot-button issue these days that it can be hard to look at the country outside of the geopolitical context. But no one interested in food can afford to ignore what is one of the world's most important and influential cuisines. Iranian cooking is heir to no less than two and a half thousand years of saffron- and rosewater-scented history. The foods of the courts of ancient Persia (as Iran was called until the 1930s) included perfumed stews flavored with cinnamon, mint, and pomegranates; elaborate stuffed fruits and vegetables; and tender roasted meats — dishes that have influenced the cooking of countries as far-flung as India and Morocco. In many ways, Persian food is the original mother cuisine.

Come join Julie Milner & Kamran Jahanshahi at their home in Highland Park for a sampling of one of the world’s oldest, yet least known culinary traditions & wine pairing.

Watch the Golden Globes with Bill and Marjorie Prepare for the Oscars! Prepare for the Emmys! 8 lucky people will watch the GOLDEN GLOBES on Sunday, January 7 beginning at 5:30 at the home of Bill Irons and Margie Rogasner. Then, as if we were the decision-makers from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in Los Angeles, we will have a lovely buffet dinner, complete with wine and desserts. After our food and libations, and after many, of what I am sure will be, lively deliberations, we will each pick our favorites from the Press Associations' selections. The Golden Globes are NOT a reference to those of us of a certain age! Rather they are a reference to the trophies given for what many are calling a Golden Age of Television, as well as for those movies likely to be nominated for Academy Awards. There will be prizes given for many things. There will be angry discussions about the winners. There will be tears of joy about the successful underdogs. There will be jibes for the ridiculous clothes and speeches. For sure: It is much more fun to watch together, especially is you watch the nominated movies first! 9 0 000035.0 35 .00025E7 25 1/7/18 5:30 PM

Storycraft Session Spend a morning with our Director of Lifespan Religious Education, Mary Shelden, crafting a story. It might be taken from some actual event from your life, or an event you've observed or read about, or something entirely from your imagination. This session will encourage you to re/imagine that event as a hero's quest or fairy tale, and support you in shaping it into a story to share with others (maybe even during a church service, if you're game -- though this is, of course not required). There are three seats available -- these can be filled by two parents and a child, or a parent and two children, or three children (related or not) -- or by three random unrelated people of any age.

9AM-1PM, with a half-hour break for lunch, Sat Jan 6, at UCE.

A UCE “TED” Talk: Lynching—American Exceptionalism at its Worst Join us for another of our highly popular discussions about the Civil War and American Exceptionalism featuring delicious small plate foods and fine wine selections. This year’s provocative topic, again presented by Civil War expert Jim Strickler, will examine why lynching was so common in the United States in the late 1800s, yet so rare in South Africa, Latin America, and every other racially mixed country. The answer provides an intriguing explanation for why race relations remain exceptionally challenging in the United States today.

You will be sure to once again find this a fascinating examination of how the Civil War has shaped many of our current issues. This event will be held at the home of Marc Rolfes and Susan Comstock, 2747 Hurd Ave in Evanston.

One case of labeled home-brewed craft beer delivered to your home. I've brewed for around 8 years and have made various styles and types: Belgian Blond, Oktoberfest, Barley Wine, Lemon-Basil-Garlic Ale, Peanut Butter & Jelly Ale, Hefeweizen, American Lager, IPAs, Vanilla Caramel Cream Ale, Margarita Gose, etc. Or, send in the clones: Stone's IPA, 3Floyds' Zombie Dust, Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPA, Bell's Two Hearted Ale, Alchemist's Heady Topper, etc. I'm happy to brew up something to suit your tastes (one month advanced notice required). Or, if you just want a recent sampling of what I have available in my cellar: (Sour Lambic, Barley Wine, Stout, Wee Strong Scottish Ale, etc.) that's available now. Cheers!
NEW: I can teach you how to brew beer! Either hang out for a brew day in the future and see the process first hand and taste some home brews or come with me to a local brewery like Temperance or Sketchbook and see how it's done on a larger scale. I am always happy to share my passion for this exciting hobby.

FEN FUN with Steve Courtright I would love to take up to 4 people for a Nature Walk through a local fen in August of 2018 to experience a wetland prairie at full bloom. We will identify plants by learning how to use a key and other references. We will sketch some specimens in order to make careful observations and finish with a picnic. I anticipate spending about a half day on the outing.

I will supply the transportation, reference materials, sketching materials, picnic, and a spotty recollection of subject matter that formed the basis of my degree in Environmental Biology.
