SOLD OUT - A pair of tickets to "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!"
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Nothing screams “fun night night out” like an evening with a 5-star meal and tickets to see Hamilton at the CIBC Theatre! However, this is not that kind of evening… and as we all know, Hamilton is only the SECOND hottest ticket in Chicago. The hottest ticket in Chicago is, of course, NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! Now in its 21st year (that’s right, Morning Edition doesn’t have to buy them booze anymore) Wait Wait is the hour-long news quiz that makes fun of politicians and their policies while simultaneously legitimizing dumb criminals and potty humor. Host and long-time Oak Park resident Peter Sagal, along with Judge & Scorekeeper Bill Kurtis, lead a rotating panel of comedians, journalists, and humorists through a comic review of the week’s news. And this is your chance to see the show live! Included in this package are two (2) tickets to see the show at the Chase Bank Auditorium in downtown Chicago! Does it get better than this? Yes, it probably does…

Date to be mutually agreed upon based on availability. Tickets must be redeemed before December 31, 2019.

This offer is for one set of two (2) tickets.

Custom 3D Printed Ceramics/Lessons in 3D Design
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
I make ceramic objects of many different varieties. My most recent work has been exploration of vessels and sculpture made with a clay 3D printer.

We will work together for an hour or two to create and prepare models for 3D printing. I will walk you through several simple yet powerful methods to quickly create vessel forms by lofting or revolving curves, and/or using a 3D scanner to create models of you or a loved one.

After our design session, I will print and fire your models and send you the digital versions to keep for future viewing or another project. If learning about design, 3D printing, or my adventures in ceramics sounds interesting, I’d love to hang out and share some of it with you.

Please check out my website where you can see many examples of my work: www.bowiecroisant.com

Fabulous French Market soup or Gumbo Ya-Ya
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Alan has been making French Market soup and Gumbo Ya-Ya for our parties for many years and has modified and enhanced the recipes to perfection! His French Market soup is hearty and chock full of beans, vegetables, ham hocks, chicken, and pork andouille sausage in a tomato and chicken broth.

The Gumbo Ya-Ya (pictured) is Emeril Lagasse’s recipe, starting with a whole chicken for the stock and a dark, rich roux that requires much time and patience to make. It is full of shredded chicken and pork andouille sausage. It has an authentic and unique flavor, and we like to serve it with white rice. “Gumbo Ya-Ya” loosely translates to “everybody talking at once” and refers to the mélange of people – French, Spanish, Indian, Acadian and African American - who melded together in Louisiana’s bayou country creating a unique community.

Alan will make your choice of soup that is enough to serve 10-12 people. French Market soup is gluten free, and the gumbo can also be made gluten-free if you prefer. Please allow two weeks’ notice.

Fall Fashion Event: Sip & Swap Experience
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Are you someone that enjoys fashion or would like to create your own personal style? Did you feel you had more fashion sense at a prior time in your life? Spend a Sunday afternoon in the spirit of Marie Kondo's tidying up while sipping and sharing and exploring your own personal sense of fashion.

Come connect fashion in ways to have fun with your wardrobe and empower your own personal style. Explore ways to look at yourself, your sense of style and how your wardrobe represents that confidence. Learn how using core pieces that you already own can transition from work-to-play. Swap items that you can’t let go of, however don’t bring you joy, by giving it to someone else to appreciate and wear around town.

Bring a photo of what you have in mind, accessories to swap, take our questionnaire, and come have fun with fellow fashion mavens that want to reinvent, recreate or celebrate our own personal style. Light lunch, wine, tea and dessert served.

Dress to impress (yourself) :)

You see fellow UU's brewing beer, talking up brews like fine wines and tasting beer as though it was an aged malt whiskey. We will have none of that at this event. Here you will be treated to the beers you grew fond of in your college days, because let's face it, that is all you could afford.

SOLD OUT A Progressive Dinner Featuring Foods from Switzerland
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Please join us in a culinary adventure of Swiss cuisine hosted by a festive group of Unity Temple neighbors who live in the Wisconsin Avenue area of Oak Park. The cuisine of Switzerland is influenced by the country's neighbors: Germany, Italy and France. As a diner here is what you can expect:

5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. ITALIAN APPETIZERS. You will start your culinary adventure in the lovely courtyard at Denise & Jerry Seeber's townhouse. There you will experience the Italian influence on Swiss food from the Ticono region which borders Italy. Then stroll three doorways to Janet Holden and Tom Barnes' condo where you will be greeted by Janet, Tom, Anne & Ed White.

6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p. m. GERMAN MAIN COURSE. How does Zurcher Geschneteltes or another special German main course, along with tasty side dishes such as Swiss Rosti sound? If you have been to Glarus, Switzerland or New Glarus, Wisconsin you know you will love these dishes.

8:00 p.m. -9:15 p.m. FRENCH DESSERTS. Your Swiss adventure will conclude a few blocks away at Teresa Heit-Murray and Sean Murray's home. You will be treated to chocolate desserts as only the Swiss and French can produce.

Imagine yourself in Switzerland in June without having to fly there. Why, you might even hear yodeling as you saunter from course to course. Once you have won your bid, we will send you logistics to our various homes.

SOLD OUT Costa Rica - Pura Vida!

In Costa Rica, Pura Vida, means Pure Life. This, Costa Ricans say instead of Hola (hello). What a wonderful greeting!! We traveled there this winter and would love to share our group experience.
This incredible place abolished their army in 1948, is number one in the world in total renewable electricity, and has made a remarkable commitment to ecology. We will bring you pictures, history, and a conversation about this exceptional country. But a great part of the evening will be a cultural Costa Rican dinner.
A starter will be a pineapple cocktail (spiked with rum, vodka or gin, your choice) with appetizers. Our main menu will be a Casado. If you order a Casado in Costa Rica, you can expect rice, black beans, salad, tortillas, fried platano maduro, and a marinated meat dish. Really nice White & Red Wines served with dinner. Famous for Chocolate, a chocolate cake with strawberries and cream to follow. Also served will be Peaberry Costa Rican coffee.

The debate has gone far beyond tastes great or less filling when it comes to beer. In fact there are those among us who believe that beer deserves a place at the table equal to (or perhaps greater than?) wine.

Paula Spears, Ed Malone and Keith Huizinga invite you to jump into the ring and join the debate. The evening will include a multi-course gourmet dining experience, each course will have a specially selected wine (Ed) and beer (Keith) for our guests to sample. You will then have the opportunity to vote on the best pairing for each course. At the end of the evening we will tally the votes and determine once and for all (or at least until next year) the champion of fermented beverages.

If you crave real flavor diversity, come spend an afternoon learning why BEER is the world's most interesting libation. As a certified beer judge, Cicerone, home brewer for over 25 years and one of the owners of Kinslahger Brewing Company, I've amassed a wealth of knowledge that is completely useless outside of a small circle of self-classified beer geeks.

I'm offering to share from my private stock of specialty beers and spend an afternoon tasting many different beer styles and discussing the brewing process, food pairings and any other geeky beer related subject you care to discuss. A light snack will also be served.

Sojourn to Showmen’s Rest
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Learn the fascinating history of Showmen’s Rest, a 750-plot section of Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park. Five granite elephants keep watch over the resting place of those who once traveled with circuses and carnivals. The first to be interred here were victims of one of the worst disasters in circus history, the 1918 train wreck of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. A place that holds many mysteries, it’s said about Showman’s Rest that if you are nearby at night you can hear the sounds of mourning elephants.

Rich Pokorny and Joan Suchomel will share with you some of the history of this heartbreaking and beautiful place, where the final acts of both the famous and the unnamed have taken place. After our tour we will invite you to enjoy a traditional picnic on the grounds at Woodlawn. Please note, in case you have mobility concerns: We are not permitted to set up tables and chairs, so “traditional” and “on the grounds” literally means we will be sitting on blankets on the ground.

While he may not be able to make you smile on paper, he can brighten your day by electronically repairing tears, scratches, faded contrast, and in some cases faded color. Isolating a subject from its background, adding drop shadows, removing dust specks and putting your head on another person's body are also possible.

Dig out those treasured or historic family photos and have them spruced up for your display shelves or as gifts. He will work on as many photos as possible in one hour from either prints (up to 8.5 x 11) which he will scan and return, or from electronic files. You will get back electronic files to print in the size you desire.

To see examples, visit http://www.jpedit.com/category/photo-restoration. Note: Kindly arrange for your service by March, 2020.

Flourless Chocolate Cake - Gluten/Dairy Free
Invalid Image LinkSold

Do you LOVE chocolate?! Are you gluten or dairy free? I make an amazing 9" flourless chocolate cake with 5 organic ingredients: organic chocolate, eggs, sugar, cocoa powder, and coconut oil. Flavored with vanilla and cinnamon, or cayenne and cinnamon this cake is delightful. It serves 8-10 people and is a very rich, decadent, and luscious chocolate treat that pairs nicely with sorbet, fruit or whipped cream. If dairy is an option, I can replace the organic coconut oil with grass-fed butter. Please request your cake a week in advance. I'm willing to work with your schedule with advance notice. This way I can have it ready when you need it and it will be delivered to your door! Perfect for serving at a party, holiday, or birthday!

Angel of Wisdom Wood Sculpture by John Taylor
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
UT member and artist, crafts sculptures from found wood guided by the principle that~

"Useless wood usually waits for nature’s scavengers to devour its substance or someone to set it ablaze. Though rejected by humans and nature alike, a piece of 'found' wood can become a thing of beauty if it is worked with patience and care. The cracks, hidden rot, worm holes, knots and twisted grains of found wood impose many restrictions on the sculptor, but to me these defects offer an engaging challenge – the faults become assets."

The Angel says: "Wisdom is taking in bird's flight of adventure, elephant's listening for signs of peril and gain."

The Angel of Wisdom is suitable for indoor or outdoor display. I completed this piece in 2015 after ageing the wood indoors for one year (2014/15). I then kept it outside for the fall/winter of 2015/16

Dimensions: Height- 30" Width- 7"
Depth- 5.5"
Weight- 10 lbs.
Sculpture material: green ash
Base material: dark grey granite with granite chips and casting resin

I have three different views of the piece for you to see, with separate links below:

Rick Talaske, sound designer of Millennium Park, Shakespeare Theater, and over 50 other significant buildings has created a perfect listening room at 1033 South Boulevard (3 doors west of our own Community Center at 1019 South Blvd).

The sound equipment in this room includes 2 Bowers & Wilkins 804 Diamond Series Speakers, a REL G2 sub, Ayre Evolution V-5 power amplifier, connected thru a Benchmark Dac system. Music has been remastered using Free Lossless Audio Codec recordings whereby between 48,000 to 192,00 samples per second can be heard vs CD’s that provide a maximum of 44,000 and MP3’s approximately project 18,000 samples per second. This allows for greater fidelity.
Prior to the event, we will ask you to submit your favorite music (paul@sachemco.com) and we will do our best to provide it.

Individual albums available now include over 95 various artists including Elton John, Johnny Cash, Cat Stevens, Eagles, James Taylor, Nora Jones, Queen, Eric, John Adams, Michael Jackson, Steely Dan, Eva Cassidy (Paul’s favorite) and many many others, including Classical arrangements.

Appetizers and snacks will be served. Please bring your own favorite liquid refreshment. A discussion and get to know each other starts at 6:30 pm, and much enjoyment of music will follow.

SOLD OUT - 12 Cannas planted in your garden
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
I will plant 12 cannas in a prepared soil spot at your home or other location within 25 miles of the church.

Cannas are tropical flowers, the variety I have grows to about 5 feet high with broad sword-like leaves and spikes that produce brilliant scarlet flowers. If you deadhead the flower spikes they will bloom prolifically all season. Cannas will grow best with lots of sun and moist soil. Cannas are planted only an inch or so deep. They grow from rhizomes not technically bulbs and the rhizomes grow horizontally.

Being tropical they will not survive the winter in this part of the world unless you dig them up and store them in a dry dark cool place for the winter. They are easy to dig and to store and they will last forever and multiply with minor care. Of course you can leave them in the ground and buy new as desired.

Note: Planting must be after the soil is warm, late April to late May for best results. Planting after June is really too late. Cannas can do well in larger planters if kept moist.

Pam's people come from southern Missouri, where the dumplin's are flat and filling. Her grandma was in charge of the church's annual chicken 'n' dumplin' dinner for 400 or so people. We aim to recreate it on a micro-scale. Sides will include homemade yeast rolls, mashed potatoes, green beans, and coleslaw. Dessert? Pie, of course.

Unusual Chicago Structures and Their Unusual Stories
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Chicago has many structures and places with odd stories and sometimes shady histories. Some were built by truly unusual characters.

We'll take a look at a few of the structures and the people who built or lived in them. Along the way we'll find out why the L Brown Line is so weird and how the Chicago River grew up. It's all part of the fabric of Chicago's built environment. We'll walk and talk and at the end we'll find an establishment that serves beverages.

Three hours, including beverage time (which might add to the time). Lots of walking, so wear your most comfortable trekking shoes!

Ed McDevitt is a docent at Chicago Architecture Center and Executive Director of Public Art Chicago. He won't be making it up.

A Wonderful Dinner Evening in "Golden Prague""
Invalid Image LinkSold

Old Bohemia, or Golden Prague, and the peaceful countryside of Moravia conjure up nostalgic images of times gone by. And that is what we want you to experience. We will start your evening with old recipe appetizers of rich pates with toasts, smoked trout and cheeses with white and red wines. As you settle in, we will have some wonderful Czech music playing, some inspiring pictures, and a brief review of what it was like to be Bohemian years ago. We want to take you back in time!

As we move to the Czech dinner table, a wonderful Moravian potato/dill soup with home-made rye bread, and sweet cream butter will extend your culinary journey. The main course will be "Svichkova", a marinated beef tenderloin, with a rich complex gravy served over home-made dumplings and red cabbage. Pilsner beer will accompany your meal, or maybe more wine?

When we retire to the living room,a homemade apple strudel with whipped cream, coffee/tea will be served while you listen to Professor John Tanderich regale you with the history of this intriguing land. Three days in a Tiny House
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Have you heard about The Tiny House Revolution? Folks are building very small houses that are unique and very livable.

We took eighteen months and built a tiny house on the shores of a small lake outside of South Haven, Michigan. It has a kitchen, full bath, a loft, and a double bed with a single bed on top. There is also a single bed. This tiny house can sleep four people, or six people if they want to climb a ladder to the loft.

This is about a 2.5 hour drive from Oak Park, in the heart of blueberry country. Included is the use of a rowboat, a tree house playground on top of the hill, a large outdoor fire pit, and a very nice patio and grill for cooking. North Lake is a 90 acre lake and has wonderful fishing for Blue Gill, Crappie, and Bass; so bring your fishing rod. Come Thursday night and stay until Monday morning.

Date to be arranged by mutual consent. Not available Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day.
