Luther Burbank 12-Volume Collector's Dream
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Claudia has inherited, and is now donating, a 12-volume, leather-bound, top edge gilt set entitled "Luther Burbank - His Methods and Discoveries and Their Practical Application - Prepared From His Original Field Notes Covering More Than 100,000 Experiments Made During Forty Years Devoted To Plant Improvement"

Luther Burbank (7 March 1849 – 11 April 1926) was an American botanist, horticulturist and a pioneer in agricultural science. He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his 55-year career. Burbank's varied creations included fruits, flowers, grains, grasses, and vegetables.

Each volume is illustrated with 105 direct color photograph prints tipped in. Signed, on vellum paper insert dedication to Christian Bosse and His Fellows of the Luther Burbank Society. Published by Luther Burbank Press, New York and London, in 1914. This is one of only seven sets from the first printing including the signed vellum dedication page. Gilt lettering on back strip. Very good condition, and, believe it or not, easy reading for the lay person.

We have an informal appraisal opinion that values the set at $1500 - $2000. Would make a great gift to the University!

Liturgical Feast
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
In the heat of summer, here’s an opportunity to be cool (in many ways) at Stefan Harvey’s home for eight lucky people.
The word liturgy means “the people’s work,” and our work will be to worship flavors, and the beauty of food. Our theology for the evening will focus on the sacred in our human lives. We’ll follow a liturgy of chalice lighting with appetizer, readings with the first course, and a suggested engaging discussion with the main meal. The Feast will be prepared by Stefan, with Beth doing her bidding in the kitchen before you arrive. Beth will guide the liturgy.
None of the aforementioned will be overly heavy in content, although plentiful enough to fill the evening. All will be designed to make the participants want more, and at the same time leave satisfied. Our parting moment will be to receive the gift of light and depart into the darkness carrying our own spark of inspiration. The dinner will be 6/09/13.

Viva Cuba!
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Cuba is a country of contrasts and it is undergoing dramatic changes with the transfer of power away from the Castro family and with the new loosening of restrictions on speech, worship and private enterprise. Additionally, Cubans still remember the period where they had to learn what it is like to go without fossil fuels when the Soviet Union collapsed and stopped subsidizing their oil imports.

Join the Urbano's and Frerichs' for an evening of photos and discussion about Cuba and these changes. Both families recently traveled to Cuba separately to experience Cuba during this transitional time. Drawing from their photos, trips and research they will share stories and answer questions about their experiences. Light food reminiscent of island fare will also be served.

Four bottles of 'wine club' wines Kunde Family Estate--Sonoma Valley
"As stewards of the land for five generations, we believe sustainable farming results in better, higher quality wine, and ensures the viability of our estate for generations to come. We are committed to a holistic winegrowing approach: nurturing the soil, respecting the native ecosystems on our property, and always working to reduce our environmental impact."

2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
This 2009 Appellation from the Sonoma Valley was released in Fall 2012. Winemaker Zachary Long notes the wine is: "opulent and complex, it offers up aromas of herbs, lavender and black cherry. The sensory experience is completed with a flavor profile rich in currants and wintergreen." Retailed for $40 a bottle

2010 Red Dirt Red--
Don't let the name fool you! This 2010 Appellation from the Sonoma Valley was released in Fall 2012. Winemaker Zachary Long notes: "The idea of crafting a wine to showcase the flavors our deep red soils impart from this estate is a great expression of Terrior. We have married the structure and intense cherry flavors of our Italian varietals with a dose of our amazing old vine zinfandel and a rich Rhone to create a very balanced treat. We’d like to think this is an Bordeaux style blend with an Italian attitude"

The flavor profile of Red Dirt Red is characterized as sweet candied cherries crushed white pepper and cinnamon with a creamy vanilla toast. Retailed for $32 a bottle.

m2 Winery--Lodi
When you come upon the tasting room you have a "I can't believe it's a winery" moment. But when you taste this winery's reds, you are quickly transported to a more idyllic setting.

This is the 2009 "Artist Series" Cabernet Sauvignon. The label is designed by Isaac Weiss, the grapes are from the Atlas Peak of the Haystack Vineyard located at an elevation of 1300 feet. This bottle retails for $35.

three Winery--Clarksburg
Matt Cline half of the Cline Winery decided to break out on his own and create artisan wines. Sourced from dry-farmed, 100 year+ vines in Contra Costa County, this wine is a blend of 77% Zinfandel, 16% Petite Sira, 4% Carignane, 1% Matar and 2% Alicant Bouschet. There is a concentration of ripe blackberries and spice with a minerality sneaking through. Retailed for $20 bottle.

Hmong Embroidered Wall Hanging - Framed
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
This depiction of Hmong farm life was constructed using darning or surface stitching, as well as running stitches. Applique work was used for the frame, as seen on the mountain motifs which are shown in the triangles, along with blue and white borders. The mountain motif implies that the Hmong are historically a highland people, and are now an agrarian society. It is typical in Hmong art to depict everyday activities in vivid, sometimes exaggerated colors. In this farm scene, some men are shown tending farm animals while others return from the fields with harvested product. A dog engages in play with a goat, while a child looks on. There appears to be a simple but ingenious water line bringing water to the farm from a higher lake in nearby hills.

Miao or Hmong embroidery has high artistic value and enjoys good fame worldwide. Miao girls learn batik and embroidery from the age of six or seven and achieve their social status in this fashion.

A Pound of Homemade Granola
Invalid Image LinkSold

Local ranch, run by church members Caroline and Sam Bledsoe, is offering "Walnutty Granola" (baked to order by Sam) in one pound packages. We mix organic oatmeal & walnuts, almonds, sunflower & sesame seeds, coconut flakes, toss with honey & canola oil, then bake till crisp.

We like to eat granola in many ways -- as an energizing breakfast cereal, as trail-mix (perhaps mixed with chocolate chips and dried blueberries!), sprinkled over fruits, or on ice cream or as a pie topping.

The Bledsoes are offering this to the three highest, and therefore luckiest, bidders.

We will meet at the church at 8am and return to Davis about 5:30pm. If the weather is inclement, the trip will be rescheduled to May 18 or June 1.

Come to learn about the challenges and issues of caring for and living in California’s dynamic landscape! Come to be inspired by the beauty of our region! This tour charges $75 per person when offered by Yolo Basin Foundation! Such a deal, eh?
