Overnight beginning backpacking adventure on C&O Canal near Antietam MD
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Would you like to join Amy & Rigel (age 11) for a beginning backpack trip? We will be going just one night and hiking from one campground to the next on the C&O Canal trail so FLAT, almost paved trail and it is only 6 miles each way. We'll camp right next to the Potomac River and there is a porta-potty and water pump. Tentative plan is to start at Antietam Creek Campsite and hike to Killansburg Cave Campsite to spend the night. The next day we pack up and hike back. Activities include setting up tents, cooking over a stove or campfire, checking out some little caves, and enjoying the beautiful view of the river. I will help you acquire gear, plan food, and prepare yourself for this adventure. This excursion can be appropriate for older children and parents or just adults. Leashed dogs are welcome to join us. Amy is certified with Girl Scouts to teach backpacking. If the weather is horrible, we will postpone until April 23rd. 5 1 000035.0 35 .00015E7 15 4/9/22 9:00 AM N

Billy Goat Trail section A -- rock scramble and hike

Do you like to hike but want more of a challenge? Does using your hands to climb sound like fun? Amy will lead a hike/scramble at C&O Canal National Historic Park, starting by the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center in Potomac, Maryland. The total loop including to the falls overlook is 5 miles. Plan for 3 hrs. Bring water and I'll provide snacks. This adventure is appropriate for children 9+ with their parent(s), if the parent feels they are capable. NO DOGS are allowed on this trail. It's not fun if you have a great fear of heights. This is NOT considered a technical climb and there is an escape trail if you decide it's not your cup of tea. A video detailing the trail is available. We will have an early morning start to avoid the crowds on this popular trail.
The hike will have to be rescheduled if it is raining, icy, snowy, or the trail is closed due to flooding. Potential raindate Feb 26th. Offered by Amy.

One way Anne Welch hooked me into UUCR was to invite me (as a newbie) to various auction dinners. In those events, I had the opportunity to meet people, one-on-one in small groups and had wonderful wine, food, and conversation. It was a WONDERFUL way to meet people. And, so, I return the favor. Dinner at my house for 5 people. I promise good food and conversation. Wine if you drink; sparkling cider if you do not! 5 0 000020.0 20 .00015E7 15 3/19/22 6:00 PM N

Crystal and Jade - a children's book
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Crystal and Jade is about the friendship between two Italian dogs of different backgrounds. The theme is that “canine friendship is color-blind” and a subtext is the joy of living with a rescue dog. The real Jade recently moved from Italy to Reston along with her human, the book's author. Young children will love the pictures, done in naif style by an Italian artist. Older kids -- and adults -- will warm to the quick-witted humor and antics of Jade and her friend. The book is "pawtographed" by Jade herself. 1 0 000016.0 16 .00012E7 12 N
