Barcelona, the Basque Country and the North of Spain
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Travel vicariously with Chuck through some politically charged regions. First, beautiful Barcelona; but are they more passionate about independence or their futbol team? In the Basque Country posters in two languages demand freedom for political prisoners. Then the journey continues at a pace of 2 ½ miles an hour as Gene (a UU from Asheville, NC) and I hike 420 miles through Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia where people are content to fly just one flag. We enjoy the tan sand beaches, the mountains, the seascapes, and amazing food & drink. As always, my walks end in Santiago de Compostela. With the help of two newfound friends, Pablo (Picasso) and Antonin (Gaudi) I’ll share my encounters with their history, art, and culture. After seeing their most famous works, I find my inspiration from surprising and unexpected sources.

Will be held in the Chapel.

Hike to Explore the Great Missoula Floods!
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Join Stanton Cobbs, an avid hiker, geologist and lover of Nature — not to mention the guitarist for our Solstice Ritual! — on a hike through the remnants of the Great Missoula Floods. Those huge and hard to imagine currents sculpted all the landforms in and all around Spokane. We will start right at our UU Church and do a hike to Bowl and Pitcher and back. On the way we will walk down to the River and work our way up a huge sandbar with one of the most spectacular views of flood features in Spokane. Then down an old Flood channel to Bowl and Pitcher, the city’s most spectacular “haystack” rocks. We will discuss currents and causes for what we are seeing and walking on.

The round trip is about 8 miles, with approximately 300 feet elevation gain, often over rough and uneven ground despite being on established trails. Long pants and boots with ankle support are required. A water bottle and snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat are always a good idea. We request that all walkers sign a liability waiver. Date to be determined in the spring, once the trails are dry. (Susan Virnig is the church contact for this hike.)

Frame for Sweat Lodge
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Frame for sweat lodge. 9 feet in diameter x 4 feet tall; copy of sweat lodge built by Jim McNeill at has home in Horseshoe Lake. The frame is built out of curved cedar branches which naturally curve when the trees get too crowded. Each intersection of the branches is lashed with copper wire with the knot toward the outside of course. On the perimeter of the lodge is a 1/2 inch rope in tension which keeps the shape of the lodge from flattening out. The lodge is up on blocks and is as strong as the days it was built 20+ years ago.

Restrictions on the bidder are as follows; 1) that you would set it up near a body of water on your property for dipping between rounds, 2) that you build a roof over the lodge, and 3) that you would occasionally invite me and others to share the sweat lodge experience with you.

Snowshoeing on Mount Spokane
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Join Georgette for a fun-filled day on Mount Spokane playing in the show. This particular activity is for those who are familiar with snow showing and are in good physical condition. You must have your own snowshoes. We will start at the entrance to the Kit Carson Trail, hike to the Snowshoe Hut and then climb a bit higher to a rolling grade that takes us back to the beginning. Lunch is included afterwards at Georgette's cozy condo.

Date and time will be determined once we see what the snow pack looks like. Specific instructions will be sent later describing what to bring, how to get there, and where to meet.
