"Celebrity" Game Night Come learn what the craze is about!

Melissa Ruiz and Paul Grabowski are offering a rousing game of "Celebrity" which has very little to do with actual celebrities and more to do with 2-3 hours of the best game night game around! We will convene at our home in Ventura, offer beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), snacks and dessert, and even do a fairly quick tutorial if you've never played before. It's a blend of charades and games like "Password" but so much better.

Leave those kiddos at home (our will be in bed).

UU Celebrity will take place Saturday November 23rd 8-10pm (or later, depending on how the game goes).

Day of the Dead/El Dia de los Muertos Celebration in Santa Paula-Sun. Nov.3 2019
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Experience a memorable day of history, culture, art, and performance. From origins in pre-Hispanic Mexico, the Day of the Dead is now celebrated in communities around the world. A spiritual union honoring loved ones in the cycle of life, death, and the seasons. Learn the rituals and symbols which give the day meaning. We start at the UU Church of Santa Paula(SP) morning service, and a tour of this stunning historical landmark. We'll come to know stories how healthful weather, agriculture, oil, New England Universalists, and a vibrant Mexican population all merge in present day SP. Our next stop is Glen Tavern Inn, built in 1911, when SP was a booming oil town. The inn continues a paranormal history dating from the Prohibition era.
Next, all within walking distance of each other, we will experience Day of the Dead activities at the SP Art, Oil, and Agricultural museums, and enjoy folklorico and Aztec performances and see the making of objects created as "ofrendas". We end the afternoon with a visit to SP Cemetery containing headstones including early area Universalists, and many graves of the 400-600 Santa Paulans who perished in the tragic 1928 St.Francis Dam collapse and flood which swept through the town. A community procession at the cemetery is planned.
Guides: David Henkel spent his teen and young adult years in SP and led the DeMolay chapter youth group. David also learned Spanish along the way. Sharon Kufeldt is a SP resident, and "Friend" of the UUCSP involved in its numerous programs. Ray Vargas' parents met and married in SP, and are buried along with both sets of his grandparents at the cemetery. His grandfather was the Methodist minister at El Buen Pastor Church of SP, serving the Spanish-speaking community.
One of our donor's grandmothers was the chef at Glen Tavern Inn. Find out whom
Activity level: Moderate-some standing or walking. Note: Donors offer transportation to Santa Paula leaving UUCV at 9:45AM- contact donor for arrival options.

Learn to Cross Stitch LEARN TO CROSS-STITCH. Adults and/or Children. All Supplies will be provided.

ADULTS: Stay focused, remain calm and relieve stress with cross-stitch. A relaxing hobby the gives pleasure and pride in completing a design. Stitching can be done almost anywhere - even in church on Sunday mornings.

CHILDREN: It's been proven that children introduced to counted cross-stitch learn more than a new fun hobby. Valuable skills honed through cross-stitch are learning to follow directions, reading a chart and transferring that pattern to their stitching, concentrating on accuracy, and accomplishing a task from start to finish.

Lessons will be coordinated based on schedules.

Retro 1950s Party Come on out for a retro 1950s kind of evening!

Please your palate with classic 1950s appetizers - Classic canapes, Rumaki, Cheese Ball, Flaming Cabbage Head Weenies with Pupu sauce and much more.

Sip a drink from back in the day: Manhattan, Highball, Daiquiri, Champagne Cocktail, or perhaps a Coca Cola in a glass bottle with paper straw.

It may not be authentic vinyl, but we'll be virtually spinning some bossa nova, 50's jazz, and bachelor pad music.

If you feel inspired, don some 50's cocktail attire - or don't.

UU Meditation Beads
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Many of us seek new ways to focus on our daily meditation and practice that is authentic and can be personalized to our own spiritual approach. Some UUs have found using "meditation beads” can be an important tool in this search.

Spend an afternoon designing and making a string of meditation beads that fits your personal practice.

We will share background on the practice, offer different designs to draw from, and provide you with materials and assistance as you design and complete your own set of meditation beads. (Beads are provided, or you can bring some special beads of your own.)

Plastic Surgery at the San Diego Zoo
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Are you interested in exotic animals? Do you like to visit zoos? Ever wondered what goes on in a zoo hospital? Look behind the scenes at surgical care at the San Diego Zoo. Dr. David Frank will present an illustrated talk on “Plastic Surgery at the San Diego Zoo.”

While on the faculty of the University of California San Diego as Professor of Surgery, David also served as a wound care consultant to the San Diego Zoo from 1990-1995. The presentation tells the parallel stories of humans and animals he cared for and the challenges of applying medical care in the veterinarian setting. This has been previously presented at both medical and veterinarian meetings. NO GORE, but there are photos of OPEN WOUNDS and SCARS so is appropriate for NON-SQUEAMISH adults and older children (high school or very mature 7th and 8th graders). Some of the animals treated: emu, koala, slow loris, and many others.

One Set of 8 Voice Lessons One set of 8 lessons (600.00 value) presented by our own Pamela Zero. Enjoy learning from the best at a mutually agreed upon time and place.

"West Coast avant-garde vocalist Pamela Zero has more than extended techniques and unusual vocalizes in here: she also has some moving songs. Living Backwards features Discord Aggregate's singer on her own, multi-tracking her voice to create rich a cappella tapestries. ... Zero has developed her own form of songwriting, drawing inspiration from sea shanties ("The Journey Home" is a genuine modern-day shanty) and Bulgarian polyphony ("Gallica"). Each song is a little gem of melodic invention, creative arranging, and vocal prowess. ... Simply beautiful." Francois Couture - AllMusic Review

"Award winning composer and vocalist Pamela Zero has been writing, performing, and teaching for decades. As Composer in Residence for the cutting edge artist collective Discord Aggregate, Zero was the composer behind the now legendary Attack of the Absolute Zeros non-opera and has several solo CD's as well. Her evocative compositions and vocal driven arrangements are instantly recognizable as is her compelling voice. With an impressive range and incredible flexibility, Zero is operating on a completely different level than most singers." Torrance Swern, Vocal!

Banana Bread and Pumpkin Bread What is better than fresh banana bread or pumpkin bread? Banana bread AND pumpkin bread! You will receive a loaf of each to eat with tea or coffee and enjoy the deliciousness of fresh baked dessert bread.

The banana bread includes walnuts, but they can be left out, just let me know!

This bread will be delivered a week after the auction, however, it can also be delivered on demand if you'd prefer it on a different day.
