Eat Vegan, Eat YUMMY Cooking Class
Invalid Image LinkSold

Have you ever wondered how vegans do it? Eat, that is.

Maybe you’ve thought about making the move to a vegan diet…maybe you’re convinced by the environmental, health and ethical rationales for going vegan, and want to go that direction, but you have some of these thoughts:

How could I ever live without CHEESE!? (ah….. find out!)

What the heck do vegans even eat?! Isn’t it just vegetables?? (nope)

How do vegans live without yummy, comforting, decadent food?! (we don’t!)

Isn’t it a lot of WORK? (that is entirely up to you…find out why)

Ugh! How do people even STAND tofu?? (poor tofu, such a bad rap…come get acquainted!)

Join a small group (4 people total) for a 2-hour class in Nancy Skinner's New Vernon kitchen where we will:

1) Chat about how to make a vegan diet work and be satisfying for you and get introduced to resources and foods you can buy to make vegan living a breeze.

2) Make a few of my favorite vegan staples and take home a goodie-bag of our work. Recipes will include vegan foods like:

Butter (Have you ever heard of Aquafaba?)

Cheese (cashew base)

World’s tastiest almond crackers

Creamy garlicky alfredo sauce

Truffles

3) Enjoy a lunch we will make together.

I’m not a professional chef or nutritionist (and I don’t play one on TV), just a well-fed vegan. I’d love to share with you how I have been a happy vegan for 10 years while enjoying delicious food, and how you can do it too!

If you’ve wanted to take the leap, come get inspired!

J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier as a source for meditation A guided Tour through JS Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, led by Birgit Matzerath. One hour to 90 minutes, in the Beacon Sanctuary.

Published in 1722 and 1742, J.S. Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” is a collection of Preludes and Fugues in all 24 keys of the circle of 5th. They are considered a highlight of polyphonic composition: independent, though not self-sufficient voices join together to create a meaningful entity, “like the members of a good society” says pianist Andras Schiff, one of the leading performers of Bach’s music. To this day, people draw comfort and insight from the deeply emotional and yet exquisitely balanced character of this music, whose structure reflects mechanisms we encounter in our every-day lives.

My presentation will provide a short introduction to the Well-Tempered Clavier, and a “guided listening tour” on the piano, through several of its Preludes and Fugues.

Home-cured Gravlax Gravlax is a Nordic dish of salmon cured in a mix of sugar and salt, seasoned with dill, juniper berries and black pepper. Gravlax is usually served as an appetizer, breakfast, or with a salad; sliced thinly and accompanied by a dill and mustard sauce, cream cheese or sour cream, either on crackers, rye bread, bagels, or with boiled potatoes. Traditional hovmästarsås (Maître d’s sauce) is included with the Gravlax.

In this home-cured version, following a time-tested recipe, salmon is turned into gold by the action of the dry curing brine. Two pounds of salmon filet are cured yielding approximately one and one-half pounds of gravlax, enough for a large crowd. The gravlax will last for a week to ten days from delivery, which will be made by arrangement with at least one week’s notice. Ideal for New Year’s Day breakfast.

In honor of National Poetry Month (no matter what time of year it happens), I would like to offer a poetry workshop for adults. I teach creative writing at the high school level and have also written and produced plays in NJ and NY for the past 10 years. I am currently working on a novel that will be finished in 10 years, maybe. Ha.

For this workshop, participants will learn (more?) about lyric poetry and write a poem on a topic of their choice. Fellowship Hall.

2 tickets to The Importance of Being Earnest One of Oscar Wilde's most adored plays that has been performed thousands of times the world over, it is the story of two men, both of whom use the name Earnest as a way of leading a different life in town than they do in the country. But even they might not be fully aware of who they actually are, until the truth is revealed at the very end.
A classic case of mistaken identities, overbearing mothers, and madcap romance, this delightful tale will have you giggling all the way home. Chatham Players, May 3 - 18, 2019

2 tickets to Play On! This is the hilarious story of a small theater trying desperately to put on a play in spite of maddening interference from a haughty author who keeps revising the script. Act I is a rehearsal of the dreadful show, Act II is the near disastrous dress rehearsal, and the final act is the actual performance, in which anything that can go wrong, does. When the author decides to give a speech on the state of the modern theatre during the curtain calls, the audience is treated to a madcap climax and a thoroughly hilarious romp. Paterson Walking Tour Paterson, NJ - who’d ever want to walk there? Actually, reasons abound! The immense hydraulic energy of the Passaic River, harnessed to serve industries in the earliest days of our republic, made Paterson one of America’s first planned industrial cities. There are fascinating remnants of elaborate raceways and canals built to divert water to mills and factories, plus historic mill structures reflecting Paterson's industrial heritage. And you will see the Great Falls, one of New Jersey’s premier natural wonders and the heart of a new national park. Ted Brewer will lead you on a walking tour of these sites. He will also take you through the Paterson Museum, in the historic mill district, which presents a remarkable array of goods, machines and artifacts made in the city, from a Wright Whirlwind radial aircraft engine, of the type that powered Lucky Lindy's solo Atlantic flight, to an iron submarine. Storied Hinchliffe Stadium near the Great Falls may also be visited. Ted will cover the museum admission charge. Celebrate Juneteenth with a Low Country Boil! Join The Cripe Family in Maplewood as they celebrate Juneteenth with a Low Country boil in honor of Jamaine's South Carolina heritage. A Low Country Boil is a regional, one-pot dish that traditionally includes catch-of-the-day shellfish, vegetables, slices of spicy sausage (like andouille or kielbasa) and an array of spices. Guests will eat family-style in the traditional way -- at a long table, covered in layers of newspaper where the entire pot is dumped and everyone eats (with their hands) from the flavorful pile, washing it down with bottles of cold strawberry soda pop or beer.

Bring your appetites, bring pants you might have to unbutton, and prepare to have a good time.

(Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 (two years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation became official) Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Texas was the last state to officially free its slaves.)

Be on the List to Fill Cancellations! Sign up to be on the list to be contacted about cancellations for Services Auction events. It is very disconcerting to donors to have an empty place at the table when they have planned so diligently to provide for a specific number of guests. The list will be maintained by Suzanne Pallak, and when an opening occurs, she will email people on the list. (Anyone who does not have an email address will be called instead). The opening will be filled by the first to respond. Once you have filled an opening, your name will be dropped from the list until all on the list have filled an opening. Flexibility is the key here. You might be called a day or a month in advance. 40 7 000010.0 10 .0001E7 10 N N N N N
